From Cotton Fields to the Pentagon: The Inspiring Journey of Author Wayne Grant

Every great storyteller has a unique path that shapes the worlds they create. For historical fiction and adventure author Wayne Grant, that path wound through the rural fields of Louisiana, decades of military service, and high-level defense policymaking before finding its ultimate expression in the written word.

Best known for capturing readers’ imaginations with tales of medieval action, courage, and archery, Grant’s life is a testament to the power of lifelong curiosity and storytelling.

Early Roots and a Love for Adventure

Long before he was drafting historical adventures, Wayne Grant grew up in a small cotton town in rural Louisiana. His childhood was defined by the rhythms of the countryside—farming, hunting, fishing, and playing Little League baseball. Between chopping cotton and exploring the outdoors, Grant developed an early fascination with classic adventure literature, finding inspiration in timeless tales like Call It Courage and Kidnapped. Little did he know that the spirit of these rugged, brave protagonists would eventually echo in his own writing.

Service, Strategy, and Leadership

Rather than heading straight into the arts, Grant pursued a path of public service. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point (Class of 1971) and served as an Armor/Cavalry officer, including tours in Germany and Korea.

Following his active military career, Grant continued his dedication to national defense, serving for four years as a senior official in the Pentagon. During a period of significant transition for the U.S. Armed Forces post-Vietnam, Grant played a direct role in helping rebuild and shape the military into a modern, formidable force.

The Birth of The Saga of Roland Inness

Despite a demanding career in defense and strategy, Grant never lost his childhood love for great adventure stories. The turning point into fiction writing came organically: when he became a father to two sons, he began making up bedtime stories for them about a brave young boy and his longbow.

Those improvised tales grew and matured over the years, eventually transforming into Grant’s debut novel, Longbow, published in 2014. The book introduced readers to Roland Inness, a young hero navigating a perilous and changing medieval world.
