The Rising Star of Pop-Opera: The Journey of Johannes Pietsch

In recent years, few artists have blended the worlds of classical vocal discipline and contemporary pop quite as seamlessly as Johannes Pietsch, widely known by his stage name JJ. Rising from classical training grounds to international acclaim, Pietsch has captured the attention of music lovers worldwide through his powerhouse vocals, unique cross-genre style, and historic achievements on the global stage.

Early Life and Multicultural Roots

Born in Vienna, Austria, on April 29, 2001, to an Austrian father and a Filipino mother, Pietsch spent a significant portion of his childhood growing up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This multicultural upbringing exposed him to a diverse array of sounds early on. While family karaoke parties introduced him to the vibrant world of pop music, his father fostered a deep appreciation for classical music and opera.

In 2016, Pietsch and his family moved back to Vienna, where he immersed himself fully in the local arts scene. His exceptional vocal talent led him to train at the prestigious opera school of the Vienna State Opera and later pursue higher education at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.

Breaking Into Television and Competitions

Before finding international fame, Pietsch cut his teeth in the competitive television circuit. In 2020, he participated in the ninth series of The Voice UK, where he advanced to the knockout rounds under the mentorship of pop star will.i.am. The following year, he competed in the fifth season of the popular Austrian television show Starmania, making it to the first final show. These early television appearances allowed him to showcase his versatility, bridging mainstream appeal with a theatrical stage presence.

Making History at Eurovision 2025

Pietsch’s career reached a monumental turning point when the Austrian broadcaster ORF announced him as the nation’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. Performing under his stage name JJ, he brought the dramatic, genre-blending pop-opera ballad “Wasted Love”—co-written by JJ himself alongside Thomas Thurner and Teodora Špirić—to the contest.

On May 17, 2025, JJ triumphed in the Grand Final, securing a total of 436 points (dominating the jury vote with 258 points and pulling strong support from the televote). This victory marked several historic milestones:

  • He became the first solo Eurovision winner born in the 21st century.
  • He earned the distinction of being the first Eurovision winner of Southeast Asian descent.
  • He brought Austria its third victory in the contest’s history, following in the footsteps of legends Udo Jürgens and Conchita Wurst.

Artistry and Future Horizons

As a sopranist (utilizing a high soprano range as a countertenor), JJ’s vocal capability allows him to effortlessly traverse soaring high notes with intense emotional depth. Multilingual and deeply expressive, he continues to expand his artistic footprint through new music releases, tours, and high-profile collaborations.
