Long before he earned the title “Son of Netflix” and became a global K-drama heartthrob starring in blockbusters like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a regular young man trying to figure out his path.

Long before the red-carpet premieres, luxury brand ambassadorships, and millions of social media followers, his life looked entirely different.

Growing Up in an Artistic Household

Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song Kang grew up in an environment naturally tuned to discipline and performance. Creativity was woven into his family background: his father was an artistic gymnast, and his mother worked as a piano teacher.

Despite growing up surrounded by physical agility and musical rhythm, Song Kang didn’t instantly map out a grand career in the limelight. During his school days at Songpa Middle School and Changhyun High School, he was a quiet, unassuming teenager who enjoyed a relatively normal youth.

Turning Down the K-Pop Idol Track

As he transitioned into young adulthood, Song Kang’s striking visuals began drawing attention. With the meteoric rise of the Hallyu wave, talent scouts from prominent K-pop agencies frequently headhunted good-looking young men on the street or university campuses.

During his time studying in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University, Song Kang was approached by several idol agencies. For many aspiring stars, a scouting offer from a major music label is a golden ticket. However, Song Kang turned them down repeatedly.

He later confessed that he lacked confidence in his singing and dancing abilities. More importantly, his heart was set on a different medium: he didn’t want to perform on a music stage; he wanted to tell stories as an actor.

Overcoming Intense Shyness at the Acting Academy

Choosing the path of a dramatic actor didn’t mean success came overnight. When Song Kang first enrolled in an acting academy to learn the craft, he had to combat a major hurdle—severe shyness.

In past interviews, he recalled how terrifying it felt to perform scenes in front of an audience, even if it was just his classmates. He admitted that he would frequently break out laughing out of sheer nervousness during exercises. On his bus or tram rides home after class, self-doubt would creep in, and he would question whether he was cut out for the profession.

Driving him forward was simple, grounded encouragement from his family. Remembering his father’s advice—“If you like it, just go for it right away”—he pushed past his anxieties, committed to rigorous training, and built the emotional depth that would eventually catch casting directors’ eyes.

The Turning Point

All of those quiet years of training culminated in 2017, when he signed with Namoo Actors and officially made his television debut in the tvN series The Liar and His Lover. Though it was a modest beginning, it paved the way for a fierce audition process in 2019, where he beat out 900 other candidates to land his breakout role in Netflix’s Love Alarm.

Looking back at the pre-debut era of Song Kang reveals a relatable origin story: a shy student from an artistic family who trusted his gut, bypassed the shortcut of the idol industry, and quietly put in the hard work to build a legacy on his own terms.
