The Release Date That Will Never Be: The Story Behind Sue Grafton’s Missing ‘Z is for Zero’
When we think about release dates, our minds usually race to countdown clocks, midnight premieres, and midnight book drops. Fans live for the thrill of a calendar date locking in. But what happens when a release date is permanently stuck in limbo—scheduled for a day that will literally never come?
For millions of mystery fans around the world, that exact phantom date belongs to “Z is for Zero.”
The Grand Alphabet Journey
To understand why Z is for Zero has no release date, you have to look back at one of the most ambitious and beloved runs in modern mystery fiction. In 1982, author Sue Grafton published A is for Alibi, introducing the world to Kinsey Millhone, a tough, fiercely independent private investigator operating out of the fictional town of Santa Teresa, California.
What followed was a decades-long literary tradition. Every few years, Grafton delivered a new installment moving sequentially through the alphabet:
- B is for Burglar
- C is for Corpse
- …all the way down the line.
Fans grew up alongside Kinsey, watching her navigate messy cases, loyal friends, and changing decades without aging at the rapid pace of real life. Grafton’s meticulous research and sharp storytelling made the series a cultural cornerstone.
A Promise Kept in Stone
As the alphabet wound down, readers eagerly awaited the final letter. Grafton openly planned to wrap up the series with “Z is for Zero”.
However, in late 2017, Sue Grafton passed away at the age of 77, having completed Y is for Yesterday. Before her death, Grafton made her wishes crystal clear: she did not want a ghostwriter to ever take over the series, nor did she want her books adapted into movies or television shows.
